The section I have chosen is Chapter 4, Page 19 -21

I believe that Martell used many literary elements in this section. Just looking at the first few chapters alone show many metaphors such as when Pi is talking about swimming.

(3) Using 100+ words of your own, explain why you chose this selection.

I chose this section due to the simple fact of the amazing information that we are given. In this section alone we see Pi talking about how animals are more likely to survive in captivity, and not out in the wild as many people believe. Pi states that animals that live in the wild live a life of compulsion, and necessity. While discussing animals he ties it into religion with ease as he compares animals to humans. Pi states he has heard the same amount of nonsense about zoos as he has about God. Which is why this section is so amazing just by discussing animals in a zoo Pi talks about pretty much the entire planet. He opens the eyes of the reader to a much broader horizon than the one that they thought they were reading about.

(4) Describe in detail Pi Patel (visually/physically)

Is this the way that we see him, or the way he is portrayed in the book? In the book Pi is described as a thin person due to the amount of swimming that he does.I can see him as sort of a mix on a young Jet Li maybe.

(5) Describe in detail Pi Patel (mentally - {who is Pi Patel?})

Pi Patel may well be one of the most intelligent people I have ever read about. Alone in the first few chapters when he talks about life at the zoo you get a real in depth look at his mental state. Also when he discusses his time in college, and how he grew up he appears to be a very intelligent person.

The section I have chosen is chapter 45 pages 152 and 153.

Martell used a few literary terms when he was talking about Orange Juice being seasick and the spotted hyena and how they got along.

(3) Using 100+ words of your own, explain why you chose this selection.

I chose this section because of the relation of Pi, Orange Juice, and the spotted Hyena. Pi is amazed at how Orange Juice is reacting to the rise and fall of the boat on the waves. Pi was astounded at how primates such as Orange Juice can have the same affects of seasickness and other illnesses that humans can obtain while at sea. Pi relates to his laughter about Orange Juice as a volcano erupting with happiness happening within. I think Pi was amazed at how long Orange Juice was able to stay alive with the spotted hyena within striking range. Pi thought that Orange Juice should have smelled like prey to the spotted hyena and predator to Orange Juice. I think that Pi was a little delirious when he thought that Primates these frugivorous tree dwellers and the carnivorous savannah dwellers would get along in the same enclosure.

(4) Describe in detail Pi Patel (visually/physically)

Pi Patel is a skinny Indian boy because he’s a swimmer and he rides his bike to most places he travels. And with the description of his father’s zoo he must get some pretty good exercise moving around the grounds of the zoo.

(5) Describe in detail Pi Patel (mentally - {who is Pi Patel?})

Pi Patel is a highly intelligent young man who has the ability to negotiate to get what he wants like his prayer rug (he doesn’t flinch like duffy). Pi seems to be very intelligent on god and the ways of the Hindus, Muslims, and Christians because he is an avid church attendee because he attends all the rituals and times of prayer for the different churches he attends.

The chapter from the story I really found interesting was chapter 23 on page 81 and continues all the way to page 88.

(2) Did Martell use any literary elements in this selection? If so, please describe.

A literary element used in this chapter of the book was conflict. He had three people from separate religions converging on the zoo. These figures began a man vs. man conflict. Also, at the beginning of the chapter the priest came to Pi’s father to talk about Pi seen going to a temple. This is a sort of foreshadow for what happens next in the chapter. The foreshadow leads to three people of different religions talking to Pi about how he had to chose one religion.

(3) Using 100+ words of your own, explain why you chose this selection.

I chose this section for a couple reasons. The first reason for choosing this section is how interesting it was to read about how these three people from separate religions are arguing over which religion Pi belongs to. Are they are trying to persuade him to come to their religions or are they (meaning the “wise men”) attacking the other religions? Is it a way to convince themselves that their religion is the right one? These are questions that I was thinking over when I read this chapter. The second reason is that this compares religions. It shows how similar these religions are and how different they are. One side note, it was very interesting to see how Pi’s father helped Pi from being in the middle of the argument. This was also unexpected to me.

(4) Describe in detail Pi Patel (visually/physically)

When I think of what Pi physically looks like I see a small boy who maybe stronger than he appears.

(5) Describe in detail Pi Patel (mentally - {who is Pi Patel?})

Pi Patel seems like a smart person. He's eager to learn new and exciting things. I feel this may be the reason he was part of three religions at the same time.

My favorite chapter is 23 on page 64.

(2) Did Martell use any literary elements in this selection? If so, please describe.

He uses a lot to description and illustration with his word in this section. He talks about the children strolling in the park and the colored balloon in the air. Then Yann foreshadows that Pi and the family getting ice cream in the last paragraph in the chapter when he add in a short little sentence on the ice cream sales in the park.

(3) Using 100+ words of your own, explain why you chose this selection.

I thought it was really interesting and amusing how all of Pi’s holy men found out all at one time that Pi worships three different religions. It kind of reminded me of those “a priest, a rabbi, and a monk walk into a bar” jokes. I found it odd how all the holy men were trying to convince Pi what religion he should choose because none of them believed that he should worship all religions. Then Pi makes them all feel bad when he explains to his holy men that the reason why he worships all those religions is so he could love god though his several different religions. Just the idea of Pi making a bunch of wise men look stupid made me giggle.

(4) Describe in detail Pi Patel (visually/physically)

Pi has a very Indian appearance since both his mother and father is Hindu. Pi has dark skin, dark hair, and brown eyes to give him the classic Indian look. He also is probably has a lot of lean muscle from swimming so he is a skinny guy who is deceptively strong.

(5) Describe in detail Pi Patel (mentally - {who is Pi Patel?})

Pi is a person who see thing in a different light than others. For example when it comes to his view on religion, he loves it so much that he is a part of three different ones even though a few priests disapprove of it. He doesn’t seem to see that the religion you are raised with should be your only religion but he sees it as one way of looking at thing. This is why I believe he added two other religions to what he worship so he can get a full spectrum on how to look at the world and see all the way to worship god. Pi Patel seems like a very open person; who can accept a wide range of views.

Gang of Four: General overall comments.

Very pleased with your answers to number 2 - well thought out - excellent job bringing examples from the story into your writing to show proof of your statements - please use this strategy throughout.

Not so pleased with the visual discription of Pi - if I could not see and I had someone read your selections to me, I could only tell you that he was kind of small, strong and brown. That could be a cup of coffee. So....I would like to see you all address this with the same vigor Pi uses to come to grips with religion. Each of you needs to redo your description of Pi - using examples from the book to support your visual.

Regarding your descriptions of Literary Devices, I was looking for my concrete terminology (like JM and SP) used. I will not make you redo this part, realize though that the expectation is such.
