Mortenson began writing letters to send out to important people in the world to try and raise money. He started off on typewriter, he got very frustrated with it. He got 623.45 from a school that collected pennies for him. Tom Brokaw gave him 100 dollars. Hoerni gave him another 12,000 dollars to build the whole school. He was sleeping in La Bamba also.
Explain who each of the following are and what role they played in this chapter: Tom Vaughan - Kishwar Syed - Syed helped him learn how to use the computer and type up his letters.
Westside Elementary School -They raised 62,345 pennis which amounts to 623.45.
Tom Brokaw - Sent a 100 dollar check
Jean Hoerni- Donated 12,000 dollars.
Describe Kishwar Syed (in regard to dress, personality, etc.) Syed is from pakistan, but a different region and he was very excited about helping Mortenson out with the school. Very loyal.
Describe Jean Hoerni (in regard to dress, personality, etc.)Very harsh, straight to the point person. Grumpy old man basically. But caring about the children in Pakistan.

he was low becuse the keys where so close together and high becuse he got a check

Chapter 6 - Rawalpindi's Rooftops at Dusk
Discuss the art of doing business in Pakistan
its a barder market with bombs
Compare and contrast 4 different business activities between Pakistan and the US
in pakistan the price is cheep in america the price is high in pakistan the product sucks in amrica it dos not in pakistan you dont work on mohameds birthday in amercia you dont work on jesues birthday in pakistan they have no money and i america the money is just giting worse
One high point was that he has the idea of building a school for 100 students for the cost of 12,000 dollars. Now he had sent 580 letters out and in about the six month time he had only received from students 62,345 pennies. One low point was that the typewriter was to small and he would hit two keys at once. Another high point was that Hoerni sent twelve thousand dollar check to Mortesons PO box.
Describe Kishwar Syed, He is from Pakistan, he is very happy to help Morteson. He is also from a different part of Pakistan.
Describe Jen Hoerni, He is what I would say as an old man. He just wants to get to the point of the matter. He has some kindness and you can see this in the fact that he helped out the kids buy giving 12,000$ to the Pakistan children.
The Highs of this chapter are, Greg gets 12,000 dollars from Jean, Kishar showed him how to use a computer, Westside Elementary sent him 625 dollars, and Tom Brokaw sent him 100 dollars.
The lows of the chapter are, Greg sent out 580 letters and only received 100 dollars, and he started writing letters using a type writer for a dollar an hour.
Kishar syed is a Pakistani in America who showed and helped Greg type his letters, and I think he is medium height, skinny, with glasses, and intelligent.
Jean is an older man who is smart, and has a lot of money. He is kind of tall and in good shape. He also has a beard.
In the US business is done in a room, and has contracts and lawyers, and stuff like that. In Pakistan you sit down, discuss the business, and drink a stinking ton of tea. Every time you do business you have tea. They also stop at prayer time to worship Allah. In the US you might have soda or water, maybe even lunch, but you get to the point make a deal and your done. Over in Pakistan you argue, deliberate, and barter.
Chapter 5:
1. Highs: Meeting Marina, learning how to use a computer, getting a $12,000 check from Jean Hoerni, having enough money to buy a plane ticket and build the school. Lows: Having to sell his car, not getting very many responses for all of the hard work he put into the letters, having to spend some of the money he raised to "woo" Marina, having to leave Marina.
2. Tom Vaughn - He is a co-worker of Mortenson at the Hospital, and he gave Mortenson Hoerni's phone number.
Kishwar Syed - The owner of Lazer Image who helped Mortenson learn how to use a computer. He also helped him come up with more names of people to send a letter to.
Westside Elementary School - The school that his mom works at, where they planned a "Pennies of Pakistan" drive, and they raised $623.45 dollars. This money helped Mortenson buy a plane ticket to get to Pakistan.
Tom Brokaw - Sent a $100 dollar check to Mortenson. He was the only celebrity, out of 580, that sent any money back to Mortenson. They went to the same school, and had the same coach for football.
Jean Hoerni - A fellow climber who sent a $12,000 dollar check, to help build the school, to Mortenson.
3. Kishwar Syed is a Pakistani from a village called Bahawal Puy in central Punjab. He was devoted to helping out Mortenson. He wears a Shalwar, but wears more American-type clothing. He is somewhat sensitive and sentimental. He cares about other people, and likes helping them out. He's not greedy.
4. Jean Hoerni - A very wealthy man. Somewhat cynical. He likes to get down to business. No unneeded words or conversation. Seems to me like he would have a somewhat small frame, and would be feisty.
Chapter 6:
1. In Pakistan, they do business somewhat similair to how people do business in Mexico and China Town. They have to get a comparison between prices, and the consumber tries to haggle down the price as much as possible. If you pretend like you are leaving, the sellers will lower the price for you in order for you to stay and buy their product.
2. Pakistan - You can bargain the price down, US - You have to stick to the price that is on the tag.
Pakistan - You can pretend like you are leaving to lower the price. US - You cannot pretend like you are leaving, and expect people to come after you and lower the price.
Pakistan - You drink tea while negotiating the price. US - You don't drink tea while buying things, and you don't negotiate the price.
Pakistan - You don't see all of the products before you buy them. US - You see products before you buy them (unless you order them, or buy them online).
In pakistan the business is very differnt from the business around here. There is basically an open air market. Kind of like china town. You try to bargain with the people that own the shops and get things at a cheaper price.
Buying Lumber in America, the price and quality is pretty much definite. In pakistan the quality ranges fromm great to terrible, and you negotiate the prices.
The cement that he bought was for an exact price no negotiations. just like in the U.S.
High’s- some of them are when he finally gets the computer so he can Wright all of the letters faster from Kishwar Sayed. Another high was when he finally got the money from jean Hoerni.
Low’s- When he had the typewriter to make all 500 letters. Then the store closed down so he could not use it no more, I think it was a low when he had to sell La Bamba. When him and Marina got in a fight for suggesting a hotel to sleep in for the night.
Tom Vaughan he was the one that gave him the name to jean Hoeri
Kishwar Syed helped him use a computer
Westside Elementary School donated 623.45
Tom Brokaw sent the 100 dollar check
Jean Hoerni Donated 12,000 dollars
Describe Kishwar Syed-
He comes from the same area as the place he is going to build the school he is a very nice guy and thinks education is important
Describe Jean Hoerni
He was a French man and very rude but he was very thoughtful for donating 12,000 dollars
Chapter 5
1) Lows: unorganized way of attacking a strategy for getting lists of people, informal way of typing up the letters, he didn't even think about what his "hook" would be hundreds of people are begging celebrities everyday for money if you really want their help you need something that they will want to help you with (why should they help build a school somewhere they haven't ever heard of VS donating to cancer treatment facilities?).
Highs: Talking to people he knows, ever hear the saying "it’s not what you know its who you know". By getting in contact with people his friends and family knew he ended up getting all the money he needed. Another high could be that he finally started dating Marina, and he found a friend that owned a copy business.
2)Tom Vaughan: Mortenson's friend from the hospital (his job) who also loves climbing and was interested to see how Mortenson's trip went, he told Mortenson about Hoerni.
Kishwar Syed: Owner of Lazer Image, Mortenson's new friend who taught him how to use a computer. He probably wears Pakistan Clothing only somewhat Americanized, such as Shalwar and American Running shoes! I also think that he would hold Pakistan's traditions and still celebrate them.
Westside Elementary School:
Tom Brokaw: Only Celebrity that returned Mortenson's letters (sent 100 dollars).
Jean Hoerni: Physicist, graduated from Cambridge University, Climber. Very rich donates the 12,000 needed to build school. Well dressed that type of Grandpa that you would come over and he’s in a suit and tie for no reason at all. Like he has to be read for an appearance and be presentable (very business like).
Chapter 6
1)In Pakistan business is done through bargaining, wheeling and dealing, and so on. If you want something you find it for the price you want and if they don't have that price you go somewhere that does, or they lower their prices.
2) Pakistan business VS US business
~ If I were to walk out of a store saying that the prices were to high and I was going to go somewhere else to find what I needed the clerks would do nothing and think I was being rude. While in Pakistan the person doing the selling would lower the price so that I would want to buy it from him.
~ While the above can be considered strange in most locations in America some places such as China town it would be very common. Wheeling and dealing is how you make sure to get your moneys worth out of your product, saying things like "well all I have is 5 dollars so i guess your out of luck, I'll just go next door and buy it there" the vendor would drop the price "just for you". Very similar to Pakistan.
~Products in America are on display and you can choose whatever one of something you want, in Pakistan they take you into a back room for bargaining and then you get what you asked for after you pay whether its what you wanted or not.
~In America you come and go as you please, sometimes not even talking to the cashier at all, in Pakistan it is considered very rude to not sit down and drink tea before starting any business.
1) Greg had many problems trying to raise funds for the school. Out of 580 letters he only got one response. He was sleeping in his car. But after his friend Tom Vaughan sent a letter to the American Himalayan foundation Greg finally got someone to give him money; Dr. Jean Hoerni.
2)Tom Vaughan: a Pulmonologist and climber (pg 48), Tom was the one who helped Greg finally get someone willing to help him.
Kishwar Syed: a Pakastani man who owned a printing shop and tought Greg to use a computer.
Westside Elementary School: the school where Greg's mom worked. Donated $623.45 in pennies to building the school.
Tom Brokaw: a recipient of one of Greg's letters, and the only one to donate money ($100)
Jean Hoerni: a swiss born pysicyst that invented a kind of computer chip. He was also a climber and donated all of the $12,000 to Greg.
3) Kishwar Syed: a Pakistani from Bahawal Puy, a village in Punjab. He owned a copy shop. He felt for what Greg ws doing becuase his village didn't have a school neither. He tried to help Greg get a date.
4) Jean Hoerni: a swiss and kind of ecentric climber. He's very blunt about things. He has a french accent.
Chapter 5:
Kishwar Syed operates a computer shop in California. My lasting impression of this man is Samir Nagheenanajar, the Arab character in Office Space . Kishwar helps Greg with his letters, because of the lack of a school in his hometown in Pakistan. Tom Vaughan is the docker Greg meets while working odd hours to work up money for the school. Tom gives Greg Jean's number, and therefore saves the theory of the school in Pakistan. Westside Elementary School, where a friend of Greg's works, raises $623.45 in pence for the cause of a school in Pakistan. Tom Brokaw is a CNN newscaster that sends Greg $100 for the school, and is also the only person to send any money from the 580 letters he sent out. Jean Hoerni is the main contributer to the school in Pakistan. His character is rough, and very demanding, but his support shows a kindness exists within him.
Chapter 5:
One major low that Mortenson experienced was that he sent out 580 letters to wealthy contributors to ask for donations in honor of his mission to raise the money to build the schools. He only got one check from Tom Brokaw, one hundred dollars. A major high that Mortenson experienced was meeting Marina and starting to date her. Her two daughters became his extended family, and made him want a family of his own.
Tom Vaughan is a pulmonologist and a climber that worked at the hospital Mortenson was an orderly for. Tom got in contact with Jean Hoerni, a scientist who developed the "planar process". Hoerni was very rich from his patent invention, and when he talked to Mortenson, he sent him the whole tweleve thousand dollars he needed to build the school. To me it seemed that Hoerni was very well respected and high society. His personality was rough and to the point, almost rude. Kishwar Syed worked at a copy shop that Mortenson would use to type-write his letters. Syed was Pakistani and decided to help Mortenson to use a computer so that writing would be faster. Syed told Mortenson that he was trying to raise money to move his fiance to America. Syed seemed sincere and of course not wealthy, so he might have not been presentably dressed.
Finally the Westside Elementary School that was mentioned raised $623.45 in PENNIES! That is incredible.
Chapter 6:
The art of doing business in Pakistan is all about bargining. When Mortenson had the meeting with the Lumber salesman they drank tea all day and finagled about the price. In comparison to the U.S., Pakistan is very casual about sales, they sit and talk and drink tea. When buying goods, there takes knowledge of the product. In the U.S. the is usually a fixed price, no bargining. In Pakistan you can reason on a price with products.

Some lows for Greg in this chapter were probably writing all those letters and not receiving many responses. Also, not being able to be with a woman he fell for just because of his financial situation for example, when he refused to stay in the expensive hotel. Some highs would have to be meeting Syed, the owner of Laser Image, and creating a friendship with him. Another high was receiving a 12,000 dollar donation from the inventer, Hoerni, even though the man gave Greg a lot of grief. Tom Vaughan is a doctor at the hospital Greg works at. Kishwar Syed is the owner of Laser Image. Westside Elementary School raised a trash can full of pennies to donate toward building the school Tom Brokaw was the news anchor that sent him the letter and money. They went to the same college. Jean Hoerni donated 12,000 dollars to build the school, he's the inventor. He dressed like a everyday person, and he wanted to help Greg because he remembered growing up and not having a school. Jean Hoerni was a very hard man that constantly reminded Greg not to mess things up. Doing business in Pakistan just reminded me of business men in the U.S. that do million dollar deals because they were so formal about it. Reputation had a lot to do with how people approached them to buy materials. Also like in the U.S. quality ill cost you money and it's not always to go the cheap route. In the U.S. the owner usually sits and talks to the client while the employee does the examples.
1. During chapter 5 and 6 Greg had many highs and lows. He went through a rough time while waiting for a response to his letters and his relationship with Dr.Marina Villard was struggleing because of his living situation. Greg was trying to save as much money as possible so he was living out of his car for a year. After selling his climbing equiptment and Labamba Greg promised Marina that he would get his act together and get a real house. Tom Vaughan is a pulmonologist and a climber him and Greg talked a lot about eachothers adventures. Vanghan got a call from a man that read Gregs news letter about the schools and wated to help. Greg called him back and explained his intentions, the man sent him a check for 12,000. The mans name is Jean Hoerni. He was a swiss born physicist with a degree from Cambridge. He seems like a very smart man with a lot of money. He was interested in helping Greg becaus he himself passed through pakistan in 74 on his way to Boltorow.Kyshwar Syed is the owner of Lazer Images. He helped Greg write the letters and learn how to use a computer so he could send more and more letters asking for donations. Syed was happy to help beacause he was from a small village in Pakistan in the center of Punjab called Bahawal Puy. Westside Elementary school did a pennies for Pakistan drive and raised $623.45. Tom Brokaw is the only person out of the 580 letters Greg sent out, that responed. He donated $100 to Greg and wished him good luck.
2. Doing business in Pakistan was was hard for Greag because he did not speak their language verry well and he had to do his best to bargin when ever he bought something. He had to make sure that no one gave him a bad deal. When Greg bought his cement he sat and talked to the sellers for a few hours while drinking tea before actually purchasing the cement. In the US we just go to lows and buy what we need right away. With lumber Greg went with Abdul again. They went to a lumber yard and the owner helped them find wood with no knots. Again they did their business over drinking tea. In the US we just tell the business what we want and they deliver it to us.
Chapter 5:
High - He writes and sends six letter requesting monetary support in his mission to build a school in Korphe, and feels exhileration, believing that he will soon receive the money he needs.
Low - He realizes the difficulty of writing hundreds of letters when he needs to type each one individually.
High - He learns to use a computer from Syed, a Pakistani, and through that he writes and sends 580 letters in a single weekend.
Low - He has trouble asking Marina out.
High - Marina ends up asking him out.
Low - The fundraising for the school was not going quite as well as he had hoped.
High - Children at Westside Elementary School sent Mortenson $623.45 for the school. Soon after, Tom Brokaw sent him a check for $100.00
Low - He received letters informing him that all sixteen grants he had applied for had been rejected.
High - Hoerni sent him a check for $12,000.00
Tom Vaughan - A co-worker and fellow climber, talks with Mortenson about each-other's climbs.
Kishwar Syed - A Pakistani, taught Mortenson how to use a computer in order to aid his mission to build a school.
Westside Elementary School - Raised money to give to Mortenson for his school-building project.
Tom Brokaw - Went to school with Mortenson, responded to one of Morteson's letters with a $100.00 check.
Jean Hoerni - A wealthy scientist who provides the money Mortenson needs to build the school.
Kishwar Syed - A Pakistani, knowledgeable about computers.
Jean Hoerni - A wealthy climber and scientist. He is brilliant, seventy years old, and has a "special fondness for Karakoram".
Chapter 6:
They drink tea while doing business. Apparently, when purchasing cement, one cannot bargain. Any business must be stopped when it is prayer time. Hours may be spent attempting to get the best deal.
In the US, we generally just pay the asking price for products, in Pakistan, it is negotiable.
Most business in the US is completed in minutes, but in Pakistan it can take hours.
Business in Pakistan is interupted by daily prayers, in the US it is not.
In Pakistan, buyers often insult sellers, unlike in the US.
Chapter 5
In this chapter Mortenson goes through the highs and lows of trying to scrape up money from anyway possible for the future school. Going from using a typewritter to the copy and paste features a computer has.
Tom Vaughn, is a doctor Mortenson works with at the hospital that is also a climber and enjoys talking to Mortenson and supports his efforts of the school. Kishwar Syed is the nice man that helps Mortenson with the new computer technology. Westside Elementary School, where Mortensons mom teaches were the first to contribute money to the schooling in Pakistan. Tom Brokaw also donated money. Jean Hoerni sounds like a very rich man who would like to help out organizations but lacks the trust factor.
Kishwar Syed is from Pakistan, so I imagine him is a shorter guy that wears a turban and works hard in his shop.
Jean Hoerni. I imagine him as a skinny, short, old white guy with a massive beard and sits in a wheelchair all day with his many riches.
Chapter 6
In Pakistan you can barter and make a better profit than you could in America.
Tea is presented in respect at business meetings. At prayer time shops shut down all over. Unlike marked prices in America, people of Pakistan barter the prices. And the cement was the one set in stone price.
Some key points in this chapter are Mortenson learning how to use a computer in order to write all 580 of his letters; recieving a 12,000 check from a rich snobby man named Dr. Jean Hoerni. He recieved 623.45 in a penny drive from his moms grade-school class. Mortensons' relationship with his girlfriend Marina had hit an all time low. Tom Brokaw contributed 100 dollars also.
Tom Vaughan- a friend who worked in the ER with Moretnson; he suggested that Mortenson talk to afriend of his that would more likely than not loan him the money
Kishwar Syed- a Pakistan man that taught Mortenson how to operate a computer in order to achive his 580letter goal
Westside Elementary School- donated 623$ off of a penny drive to Mortensons cause
Tom Brokaw- Donated 100$ to the cause
Jean Hoerni- rich Dr. that donated 12,000$ to the cause
Describe Kishwar Syed- I see him as a person who trys really hard to fit in with American culture. He seems like a very nice guy who likes to help people out
Describe Jean Hoerni- very sour but doesn't want to get screwed over
Chapter 6 - Rawalpindi's Rooftops at Dusk
Discuss the art of doing business in Pakistan- the art is to have a cup of tea with every meeting. You also need to push your point really hard and if you don't get your asking price, pretend like your going to leave.
Compare and contrast 4 different business activities between Pakistan and the US- In America we don't have tea before every meeting, we don't really need to be careful about "nice" or "mean" people like Pakistan does. America doesn't really threaten to leave because 9 times out of 10 people wouldn't stop you because there is always business in America. Both America and Pakistan like to present what they are offering in a way that shows their product is better.
C5
1. Mortenson's first low was spending a full day typing 6 letters on the typewriter, until he met Kishwar Syed who taught Greg to work a computer, his next low was his inability to ask Marina out on a date and his loneliness, Marina asked him out after 2 months of talking. His mom then sent him $623.45 that her elementary school had raised (Westside Elementary School), he only recieved one other letter for $100. Finally Dr. Vaughen had found someone interested in Mortensons mission, Jean Hoerni who donated the full $12,000 that it would take to build the school.
2. Tom Vaughan: was another doctor Greg worked with who also climbed. He helped Greg to find supporters of his mission.
Kishwar Syed: is the owner of the print shop Greg visited. Kishwar being Pakistan who didnt have a school in his village was very interested in what Greg was doing. He was a very nice but loneliman. Syed and Mortenson became good friends.
Westside Elementary School: Gregs mother was the principal of this Elementary School. She explained to her school what her son was doing and ran a fundraiser "Pennies for Pakistan".
Tom Brokaw: A former football player of the University of South Dakota, as was Greg. Donated $100.
Jean Hoerni: A climber, a unhappy , abrupt man, who invented "a type of intergrated circuit that paved the way for the silicon chip". Donated the full $12,000 to build the school.
C6
1.Comparison: When bargaining US and Pakistan both act as if to leave, although bargaining is not nearly as commen. Both consider reputations and quality.
Contrast: Pakistan you must bring tea. Your duties as a Muslim come into play.
1. One of the lows in the chapter was when he realized how long that typing all of the letters on a typewriter would take. A high was realizing that there was a invention called the computer and then how it could speed the process up.
2. Tom Vaughan- was the Nigh shift doctor and the Emergency Room where Mortesan worked, Kishwar Syed was the Pakistani that moved to this country to make money for his arranged marriage he taught Mortasan how to work the computer, Westside Elementary School- this is the school where his mom is the Principal this school was the first place that actually gave a significant amount of money for his cause $623.4,
Tom Brokaw- this the CNN Anchor and he was the only one out of all the letters that actually sent him a little money $100, Jean Hoerni- was the man that basically gave him all the financial backing for the School he was a climber in his day. and is extremely wealthy.
3. Description of Kishwar Syed- I believe that he has a tattered collard shirt and wearing blue jeans with a helpful personality.
4. Jean Hoerni- I believe that his standard dress would be a business suit and he is kinda a self pretentious person.
Ch 6.
1. The art of doing business in Pakistan seems to be haggling. He haggled about price on everything from Cement to the wood to build the school to the transportation he hand to arrange to shop all of the products to the job site.
2. One activity that is different in Pakistan than in here bargaining is a big part of the business in Pakistan. The cement business in Pakistan is run like the Mafia in America, drinking tea is a major part of doing business in Pakistan it is used at the negotiation table at all Businesses, The lumbar yard was able to drop the price constable for Mortason.
Chapter 5
In Chapter 5 Mortenson experienced many lows as well as highs. His decision to write the five hundred letters was a high for him because he believed that it would help him raise the money fast. But when he had to begin typing them one by one on the type writer that was a low for him because he could only complete a few a day. Some other lows were, not getting any replies except one from his letters, having to sell the la bamba, and Marina getting mad at him. His highs were getting a girlfriend, getting a one hundred dollar check, learning how to use a computer, and getting a $12,000 check from Hoerin, that gave him the money needed to build his school in Korphe.
Tom Vaughan was a doctor/pulmonologist, and a climber. Mortenson knew him form the hospital he worked in.
Kishwar Syed showed Mortenson how to use the computer.
Westside Elementary School is Mortenson’s mom's school that collected $623.45 in pennies for the school.
Tom Brokaw is the news anchor that sent Mortenson the $100 check.
Kishwar Syed was the man from laser image that was from Pakistan and hadn't had a school growing up either. He thought Mortenson was doing this for a good cause and it related to him in a way, so he helped him use a computer and printed 580 letters and some grants as well.
Jean Hoerni is the guy that called for Mortenson and gave him the $12,000 check for the school. Hoerni was a climber as well and he was a "rich" French man, that was fond of the Karakoram.
Chapter 6
Business in Pakistan is negotiable and you can bargain for the lowest price.
Compared to America, you can't bargain anything. The price that’s on something in a store, is the price you pay, it's not negotiable.
Business activities in Pakistan are very different than in America.
When you go somewhere to buy something in Pakistan you are greeted with tea, in American you are sometimes only greeted with a simple "hello".
All of the stores in Pakistan stop or close at a certain time for prayer. They get on the ground, face Mecca, and wash and pray. American stores don't do that.
In Pakistan you can bargain the price of the products and America doesn't do that either.
In Pakistan the people try to sell you high quality products such as wood, (which they compared in this chapter) because it will last. In America they will sell you whatever most of the time because that’s the way some of the economy is. The producers will mass produce things and use cheep stuff to save them money, and make more profit.
Chapter 5;
This chapter is shows mortensen’s highs and lows while he was promoting funding for a school in Pakistan.
The following is mortensen's highs in chapter 5: When he first started to write the letters; When Kishwar Syed taught him to use a Mac computer and he started to produce more letters; When he started to date Maria; When Maria's class came up with over 6,000 pennies for the school in Pakistan; and at the end of the chapter when Jean Hoerni gave him the $12,000.00 for the school and told him not to screw it up.
When Tom Brokaw gave him the $100.00 I think it was a high point and a low point, it was high because at lease someone cared enough to send at least a little donation but a low point because it was only $100.00 and if I was him, I would be offended because I would think that people weren’t taking me seriously.
The following are Mortensen’s lows in Chapter 5: When he sent off 580 letters and only got one check. I'm guessing when he sold La Bomba (his car. The poor guy, all he was trying to do was build a school for children in Pakistan and all he gets is pooed on.
Tom Vaughan: Doctor, climber, friend to Greg.
Kishwar Syed: Pakistani who taught Greg to use a Mac computer.

Jean Hoerni: Physicst and a climber who first grilled Mortensen, then gave him a check for $12,000.00
Kishear Syed- I picture him as young Pakistani gentlemen, he must not be too handsome considering he is single in America. I see him as having a full beard and mustache with brown eyes. I think of him as an honest, kind gentleman.
Jean Hoerni- I picture him as an older Caucasian male with blue eyes, and pointy nose with classes and a long face. I think of him as a down to business, "I'm better then you," Doctor.
Chapter 6
Not only do they like to haggle, they have to sit together and drink 3 cups of tea, 1. You are a stranger. 2. You are a friend. 3. You are close like family.
Usually in America, we settle for the printed amount, we like to joke around and be semi casual, but they like things to be really organized and professional.

Chapter 5:
1. Summarize the highs and lows Mortenson experienced in this chapter through brief examples.
-In this chapter there were a lot of different high and low points throughout the whole thing. One high point that seemed really important was that when Mortenson had planned out the school for the hundred children he found out that he was going to have to get 12,ooo dollars to build it. He sent out many letters and only came up with about 625 Dollars. Then one day he got a letter from Jean Hoerni with a check of 12,ooo dollars. A big low point in this chapter was with the typewriter that he was using. The typewriter was small and the whole time that he was trying to type the letters, he ended up hitting multiple keys and then he would have to start all over. THis was very frustrating for him.
2. Explain who each of the following are and what role they played in this chapter: Tom Vaughan - Kishwar Syed - Westside Elementary School - Tom Brokaw - Jean Hoerni
-Tom Vaughan: He was friend of Mortenson and he liked to climb and he is a doctor at the sme hospital. He did not give money but he was a great friend.
-Kishwar Syed: He knows a lot about computers and he helps Mortenson with typing and sending the letters. He is also from Pakistan, but from a different area.
-Westside Elementary School: He recieved money from them that added up too 62,345 pennies or about 625 dollars. His mom is also the principle of this school.
-Tom Brokaw: He went to school with MOrtenson, they didnt really know each other very well they were on the same football team, but he wanted to be generous and sent Mortenson 100 dollars.
-Jean Hoerni: He was a very wealthy scientist, who didnt even know Mortenson. He had read about Mortenson in the paper and wanted to help out so he sent him 12,000 dollars.
3.Describe Kishwar Syed (in regard to dress, personality, etc.)
-He seems very intelligent and knows a lot about computers. In knowing this, I think that he has glasses, wears slacks, and a button up shirt. He is very neat and clean.
4.Describe Jean Hoerni (in regard to dress, personality, etc.)
-He is a scientist, and very rich. He donates 12,000 dollars to Mortenson to build the school. He dresses professionally all the time with a tie and suit. He is really straight forward and gets too the point, in some cases he seems mean and blunt.
Chapter 6:
1. Discuss the art of doing business in Pakistan
- When doing business in Pakistan, they are pretty laid back and casual. It is almost a tradition that you have tea with the salesman and discuss the product very professionally. Usually you can bargain with the person and lower the prices, Where as here in the US the is a set price and you cant really bargain.
2. Compare and contrast 4 different business activities between Pakistan and the US
-In the US it seems like we dont really take the time anymore. In Pakistan you sit and have tea with the store owner. In the US we most likely even say hello to the salesperson.
-In Pakistan you can bargain down the prices, and in the US you cant really bargain unless your at a flea market or something.
-In Pakistan, you might not get too see what you are buying before you buy it. In the US you usually always see the product and you just pick whatever you want without any question.
-In the US you dont really have too know about the product, but in Pakistan when your drinking tea, you are expected to know a lot about the product, and you tend too discuss them.

A high for him was when he met Marina at the UCSF Medical Center he thought she was the love of his life. Another high was when he went to Wisconson where his mother was the pricipal of Westside Elementary Schoool. This is where he told his story to all six hundred students, so the students held a "Pennies for Pakistan" drive and earned $623.45 for his School in Pakistan. Westside Elementary School- They did a fund raiser "Pennies for Pakistan" and earned $623.45 This was the first donation out of anything he had done to get money for the school.
Tom Brokaw- He was the only one who sent a check out of all the 580 letters that he sent out for donations. He sent a letter and a check for $100 to his fund raiser.
Jean Hoerni- He was a fellow climber who gave Mortenson $12,000 which was all the money he needed for the school. He was trying to make sure that he wasn't going to spend it some just random stuff so he was really sceptical about giving him the money.

• Compare and contrast 4 different business activities between Pakistan and the US
Pakistan based on amount while US puts a price on each item and adds a total which leads to saying our material is more expensive
C5-
1. In this chapter, Mortenson goes through many ups and downs. First Mortenson struggles with typing 580letters with a slow, small typewriter. Things turn around when Kishwar Syed, the owner of a print shop, helps Mortenson write his letters on the computer. Another down that Mortenson goes through is having to live in his Buick to save money, but things become better when he starts dating Marina, a girl at work who he has admired. Probably the most significant low that Mortenson experiences in this chapter is not receiving only one check back from the 580 people that he had written to. Things started looking up dramatically when his mother sent him a check for the $623.45 that the children from her elementary had school raised. Dr. Jean Hoerni, a rich climber, responded to an ad in a newletter and ended up giving Mortenson $12,000!
2. Tom Vaughn: Co-worker of Mortenson who submitted the ad in the climber newsletter and received Hoerni's number
Kishwar Syed: Pakistani owner of Lazer Images who helped Mortenson learn to use a computer. He was very nice and helpful. Mortenson and Syed often talked about women.
Westside Elementary School: Mortenson's mother is the principal of this school. The children raised $623.45 for Mortenson.
Tom Brokaw: Only person out of the 580 to give Mortenson money.
Jean Hoerni: The rich French man, who gave Mortenson $12,000 to build his school. Although he was not the nicest sounding person on the phone, he was super helpful and generous.
CH6
1.
Chapter 5 – 580 Letters, One Check
Mortenson experiences many highs and lows throughout chapter five such as when he has bad luck with a typewriter when he begins to type letters to perspective endorsers, but then his luck is turned around when he obtains the more highly advanced computer and realizes he can type, copy, and paste a much larger quantity of letters in a much shorter period of time. Another example of a high and low he experiences is with Marina. They would often travel to Yosemite and camp out in the La Bamba and have the time of their lives, but then Marina wanted more and wanted to go to Ahwhanee, but Mortenson simply did not have the money to take her there.
Tom Vaughan is a tall, lean, spectacled, and serious pulmonologist and climber. Tom obtained information for Mortenson by finding a gentleman by the name of Dr. Jean Hoerni that was able to help him with a huge donation for the school in Pakistan.
Kishwar Syed, the owner at Lazer Image provided a helping hand to Greg by showing him brief tutorials of how to use a computer. Syed is a Pakistani from a small village of Bahawal Puy that also didn’t have a school so what Mortenson was trying to do intrigued him. These two became friends in chapter 5 and discussed many things with one another. Kishwar is a very friendly, helpful man who benefited Greg Mortenson’s life greatly.
Westside Elementary School is the school where Mortenson’s mother is principal. One day she asked her son to come and give a speech at the school about what he was trying to accomplish in Pakistan, after doing so, the school decided to run a donation drive called “Pennies for Pakistan.” They raised $623.45 to contribute to the building of the school.
Tom Brokaw attended the University of South Dakota and both were coached by Lars Overskei when they were in football. Tom Brokaw helped contribute to the school by donating one hundred dollars for funding.
Jean Hoerni was a physicist; he invented a type of “circuit that paved the way for the silicon chip”. He solved how to pack information onto a single circuit and patented it as the “planar process.” After briefly talking with Greg Hoerni contributed the whole twelve thousand dollars Greg needed for the school in Pakistan. He is a very blunt and short tempered person who happens to have a lot of money that he is willing to put towards good causes and for this, he is also very generous.
Chapter 6 - Rawalpindi's Rooftops at Dusk
The art of doing business in Pakistan is very relaxed and deals a lot with bargaining. The people there are very sneaky when dealing with their business tactics such as pretending they are going to leave in order for the employer to lower the price. Crude exchanges of words are dealt with when doing business there also.
The first thing that is different with business activities between the United States and Pakistan is that in Pakistan they drink tea while negotiating, maybe to calm the nerves. The next thing is that in the United States they do not allow you to view all the products before buying, but in Pakistan they show you all of the products in person and give you the downsides to the cheap ones and the upsides to the expensive ones. Then bartering is a common activity in Pakistan, a lot like Mexico. If you do not like the price of a certain item, you pretend to be no longer interested and walk away until they continue to lower the price to your satisfaction. The last thing that is different between the United States and Pakistan business tactics is that crude language is displayed throughout the course of many of the conversations.
Chapter 5
1. There were many highs and lows for Mortenson in Chapter 5. The highs consisted of meeting Marina, being caught how to use a computer, receiving a donation from Jean Hoerni, which made his dream of building the school in the village of Korphe possible. The lows consisted of only getting one response out of 580 letters, having to leave Marina after establishing a relationship and having to sell his car.
2. Tom Vaughn - Works with Mortenson at the hospital and provided Mortenson with the phone number of Jean Hoerni.
Kishwar Syed - Individual who helped Mortenson learn how to use a computer. Also contributed names to Mortenson's list of people to send letters to.
Westside Elementary School - The school that helped raised money for Mortenson to send him to Pakistan. The school did this by planning a "Pennies for Pakistan" drive. Mortenson's mother also works at this school.
Tom Brokaw - The only celebrity who responded to Mortenson's letter by donating $100. Tom attended the same school as Mortenson and had the same football coach.
Jean Hoerni - A man who sent donated $12,000 to build the school in the village of Korphe. He was also a climber like Mortenson.
3. Kishwar Syed is a sensitive and loyal friend to Mortenson. Devoting his time to help Mortenson raise enough money to pursue his dream of providing the children of Korphe with a school. Since Kishwar is a Pakistani, he wears a Shalwar but also wears American clothing.
4. Jean Hoerni is an older man that likes to get straight to the point. He is willing to help people but always makes sure that it is for a good cause. Since Jean is wealthy I am sure that he dresses in nice clothing and is somewhat proper.
Chapter 6
1. In Pakistan business is usually conducted by bargaining. One will gathering different prices for the same product and compare each price to make sure they are getting the best deal.
2. In Pakistan one can bargain with another to receive a good price. One is not able to that in the United States.
In Pakistan it can take up to a couple hours to conduct business. Where in the United States it can only take a couple of minutes.
In Pakistan business is conducted over tea. It is not common to share anything while conducting business in the United States.
In Pakistan, since conducting business can last a couple hours it is sometimes interrupted by daily prayer. In the United States it is not common for one to pray five times a day or conduct business for a long period of time.
Ch 6
Business is done very differently in America compared to Pakistan. In Pakistan business is done while drinking tea and occasionally stopping to pray to Allah. A high price is usually stated at first and then it is slowly lowered until both parties are happy. In America people barter a little bit but not as much as the Pakistanians. Business in America, is usually much quicker and is not considered rude to not bring and drink tea.
He sent out 580 letters, with only 1 response. On a better note, children donated over $600 in pennies to give to the school.
Explain who each of the following are and what role they played in this chapter:
Tom Vaughan (Doctor), kishwar Syed (Copy guy, helped with PC), Westside Elem. (Children donated over $600 in pennies), Tom Brokaw (Donated $100, only reply), Jean Hoerni (Donated the $12,000.
Describe Kishwar Syed (in regard to dress, personality, etc.)
He is from Pakistan, and was very enthoused about the whole idea, and wanted to help.
Describe Jean Hoerni (in regard to dress, personality, etc.)
Jean Hoerni was french, straight forward, and old. He has a big heart though.
Chapter 5
In this chapter, Greg Mortenson wrote 580 letters but only one person by the name of Tom Brokaw sent money. Brokaw sent Mortenson 100 dollars. Mortensons mother had a fundraiser in her class at school and the kids were able to raise 623 dollars. This gave Mortenson some hope.
Mortenson also talked to a man named Hoerni on the phone and Hoerni later sent 12 thousand dollars for the school to be built. Mortenson sold La Bamba for money to fly back to Pakistan and build the school.
Tom Vaughan is the doctor and climber that told Mortenson to call Hoerni.
Kishwar Syed is the man that tutored Mortenson on the Mac. to help him type his letters faster.
West Side Elementary School is the school that raised the 623 dollars for the building of the school.
Tom Brokaw is the man that sent the only 100 dollars.
Jean Hoerni donated 12 thousand dollars to the building of the school in Packistan.
Syed is really good with computers and understands technology. syed dresses professionally.
Hoerni seems like a very busy man, when he asked for the amount needed to build the school Mortenson started to explain some stuff and Hoerni snapped at him and said "A number!"
The art of doing business in packistan is bartering and trying to get the better end of the deal, or a lower price.
We use dollars, they use rupies. They barter in Pakistan and for the most part here in the U.S. we don’t barter a ton.
Chapter 5
Sending out his letters, Mortenson meets Syed, who teaches him how to use a computer. Mortenson receives only a $100 check from the people he sent letters to. His mom tries to help out by starting a fundraiser where he gets $623.45. One day, he gets a call from a "Jean Hoerni" who ends up helping by giving Mortenson money in the full amount to build the school. During all of this, Greg has no home and is living in his car, "La Bamba."
Tom Vaughan was a pulmonologist who worked with Mortenson at the hospital. He likes to climb and is a friend to Mortenson.
Kishwar Syed is from Pakistan, he owns a computer store; he taught Mortenson how to use a computer. He is a very nice man.
West Side Elementary School is where Mortenson’s mom works; she helped by starting fundraiser “Pennies for Pakistan” and raised $623.45 for Korphe School.
Tom Brokaw sent Mortenson a $100 check.
Jean Hoerni was the man that gave Mortenson the $12,000 to build the school; he is kind of a mean, bitter old man.
C5. A low would be that he is a slow typist. A high would be that he finally started to receive money.
Tom Vaughan was one of the doctors at the hospital he worked at.
Kishwar Syed was a Pakistani that taught him to use the computer.
Westside Elementary School was where his mother was the principal. He went and gave a presentation and the children decided to fundraise and they donated 623.45 Dollars.
Tom Brokaw sent him 100 dollars for the schools.
I think of slacks and a collared shirt with a sweater vest and glasses.
He seems old and bitter but still with hope. He probably wears jeans and an old college sweatshirt or something. He’s French right so he probably smokes and drinks wine, and I know I’m playing into the stereotype but it’s what I think.
C6. You drink a mother load of tea and argue and drink more tea and make references to who is a good Muslim and who isn’t because of their business practices. They are definitely not politically correct. I think it could be scary if you didn’t understand what was going on, but it is their culture.
Businesses in the US wouldn’t discuss religion. But in Pakistan they do.
There is no bartering or reworking of prices usually.
Business is done quickly in the US; they don’t sit and drink tea and visit.
Certain industries are run more like a mafia than a legitimate business.
Chapter 5:
1. In chapter 5 Mortenson had many high's and low's. He started off struggling to type the letters trying to get money for the schools. It took him many hours to only type 6 letters. Then on a high note he got a ton of help from Kishwar Syed, who taught him many computer skills, so that Mortenson could write the letters on the computer with ease. But on a low note out of the 580 letters he sent out he only recieved one check for 100 dollars. But the children had raised $623.45 to help Mortenson build the school in Pakistan. Also Dr. Jean Hoerni gave Mortenson $12,000 to build the school. Which those were defently a high in chapter 5. Another high was that Marina and Mortenson started dating. Which he has been dying to ask her out for a long time and she ended up asking him out.
2.Tom Vaughan- He was Mortenson's co-worker who put the ad into the climbers newsletter. He also gave Mortenson Dr. Jean Hoerni's number who gave Mortenson the $12,000 to build the school.
Kishwar Syed- Helped Mortenson learn how to use the computer so that he could write the letters with ease. When they weren't talking about computers they would talk about women. Helping Mortenson to get the courage to talk to Morina.
West Side Elementry School- The children who attended West Side raised $623.45 by saving pennies for Mortenson to use towards building the school in Pakistan.
Tom Brokaw- Out of the 580 letters that Mortenson sent out Tom was the only person who sent him money, which was for 100 dollars.
Jean Hoerni- Jean was a doctor who gave Mortenson the $12,000 dollars to build the school in Pakistan. He came off very bold and rude, but he ended up being a very generous and nice man.
1. Mortenson has a really hard time using a typewriter sometimes and he didn’t know how to use a computer which would of made it much faster for him to type letters to people. He also had to live in his car which I am sure was extremely difficult as well.
2. Tom Vaughn was a doctor that Mortenson worked with at the hospital. He was tall and serious and was also a climber like Mortenson so the two got along very well and had many chats at the hospital when it was slow while they were working. Kishwar Syed was the man that owned Lazer Image, the place that Mortenson went to try and rent a typewriter. He also helped Mortenson learn how to use a computer, which helped him complete his letters asking for money for the Korphe school much faster. Tom Brokaw was the football player that was the first one to send Mortenson a check for the Korphe school in response to his letter. The check was for one hundred dollars. Jean Hoerni is the ornery old climber and scientist who heard about Mortenson’s predicament from a newsletter and decided to give him the twelve hundred dollars he needed for the Korphe School.
3. Kishwar Syed was the owner of the Lazer Image shop, the one that Mortenson went into to see if he could rent a typewriter. Kishwar was a Pakistani trying to raise money to bring his chosen wife to America. He taught Mortenson how to type on a computer to make his letter writing more efficient, because he had grown up in a village in Pakistan with no school as well, so Mortenson’s cause was very dear to him. He was always a good friend to Mortenson, not only teaching him about the computer, but also giving him advice on his crush as well. He was just an all around good friend to him.
4. Jean Hoerni was a business man who was extremely rich. He was a scientist as well as a climber. He was known for being quite ornery and borderline rude to people but he was extremely intelligent. He contacted Mortenson when he read the newsletter and ended up paying the whole twelve grand out of his pocket for the Korphe school because he as well had spent time there in that region and has seen the devastating conditions those poor people had to endure.
5. Business in Pakistan is quite interesting and actually, I believe, quite fair. It consists a lot of talking one another down, perhaps sometimes even a little bickering however it usually always ends in good terms. Many cups of tea are consumed during a business transaction and in the end, after talking and discussing the proper price of the product for quite some time a price is decided upon.
Comparing and Contrasting Business in US & Pakistan
US)No bartering, the price it is marked is the price that you get.
Pakistan)Bartering is accepted and quite common!
US)Some stores don’t even allow food or drink
Pakistan)Tea is always around and drank while doing business
US)You just help the customers find what they need if they need help if not, you leave them alone.
Pakistan)It is a very personable experience. People treat each other more like people rather than just another customer.
US)People can get in trouble for selling non-quality products.
Pakistan)If you buy a non quality product, you are basically just screwed!

Chapter 6 - Rawalpindi's Rooftops at Dusk
• Discuss the art of doing business in Pakistan
When doing business you can barter most of the time in order to get a cheaper price. But you cannot barter with cement, it’s some stigma in Pakistan.
• Compare and contrast 4 different business activities between Pakistan and the US
1.) Some businesses don’t advertise their goods and services in Pakistan. In the U.S. advertising is GOLDEN.
Ex. “The tailor didn’t advertise. He was tucked into a concrete hive of shops off Haider Road…”
2.) Pakistani business people like to think about their purchases over tea before bargaining or buying.
Ex. “But Greg, Sahib, first we must take tea and discuss cement. (p60)”
3.) Muslims usually give deals to other Muslims.
Ex. “…but Abdul was firm in his choice. ‘This man is the good Muslim,’ he explained.”
4.) Offices are different.
Ex. “For two crisp hundred-dollar bills, Abdul Rauf, an architect whose office consisted of a cubicle in the lobby of the Khyaban hotel…”
Chapter 5
-n this chapter Greg Mortenson writes 580 letters famous people asking for money donations for the school he wants to build. he starts out struggling with a type writer that his fingers are too big for. he finally goes to a place and is tutored on a Mac and learned how to type. the letters went by fast after that. sadly only one letter was answered with a 100 dollar check from Tom Brokaw. Luckely Mortenson's Mother's class raised 623 dollars in pennies and sent to him. Mortenson also got a girlfriend in this chapter named Marina and broke up with her in the same chapter. He was also reffered to a french man who was filthy rich who gave Mortenson the rest of the money.
-Tom Vaughan was a doctor/ climber who Mortenson worked and talked with. he also reffered Mortenson to Hoerini the french man.
-Kishwar Syed was the man who tutored Mortenson on how to type on a omputer to make the wirter go faster.
-The Westside Elementary School raised 623 dollars in pennies for Mortenson's cause.
-Tom Brokaw was the only reply that Mortenson got out of all the 580 letters sent. He sent 100 dollars.
-Jean Hoerni was the rude, rich French man who donated the rest of the mony Mortenson needed.
-Kishwar Syed decided to dedicate himself in teachin and helping Mortenson with his money raising ordeal. He was very helpful.
-Hoerni I thought was kind of rude but was willing to help. he sounded like a impatient rich buisness man.
Chapter 6
Mortenson wanted to bargain to get the best price for all the materials to make sure he could
get the best and as much as he could in his budget.
Chapter 5: Mortenson started writing letters in this chapter to try and raise money for the school. He began on a typewriter, but that became too time consuming. A man that he met named Kishwar Syed, taught him how to use a computer. He completed 580 letters, only getting one response from Tom Brokaw with a 100 dollar check. Tom Vaghaun was a man who had done something similar to what Mortenson was trying, only he had been extremely succesful. After he visited them and shared what he was doing, Westside Elementary School started a fundraiser for him, raising 62,345 pennies. In the end, a man named Jean Hoerni, who was highly assumptious, gave him the 12,000 dollars needed to complete the school.
Chapter 6:Doing business in Pakistan is all respect and conversation. In the U.S. we are all technical about our businesses and in Pakistan its all in person. To buy anything in Pakistan you either haggle it, or sit down and talk about it over tea. In the U.S., everything has a set price and a cash register. The people in Pakistan take into consideration what you are buying and try their best to ensure your success. In the U.S. poeple are all about selling the most expensive and new things right away.
Chapter 6:
In Pakistan, buisness involves a lot of bartering unless it has to do with cement.
Pakistan and America have very different buisness ways. In Pakistan they are more laid back, while they drink tea and pray to Allah. Most buisness prices lower in Pakistan. While in America there is not much bartering, most prices stay close to the original set price. Also in America they are going at a very quick pace, because they want things to be done as soon as possible.
C5 - 580 Letters, One Check
Summarize the highs and lows Mortenson experienced in this chapter through brief examples. Well for one, Mortenson had no idea how to use a computer, which made writing the letters for donations significantly more difficult. He also had no where to live but his car because he was trying to save money for the school. Also, all of his letters and grant applications were denied, but in the end he met Jean Hoerni who helped him up until his death by paying for numerous things the school needed.
Explain who each of the following are and what role they played in this chapter: Tom Vaughan - Kishwar Syed - Westside Elementary School - Tom Brokaw - Jean Hoerni
Jean Hoerni- A stubborn old man who donated the twelve thousand dollars Mortenson needed for the Korphe school.
Tom Vaughn- a fellow doctor that Mortenson worked with whom he talked to about multiple things. He was also a climber
Kishwar Syed- A pakistani who helped teach Mortenson how to use a computer so he could write his letters more effeciently and also helped him with his letters.
Westside Elementary- Did the pennies for pakistan drive and raised over 600 dollars for Mortenson.
Tom Brokaw- Sent Mortenson 100 dollars for the Korphe school.
Describe Kishwar Syed (in regard to dress, personality, etc.) Well he was just a very kind man who also wanted to help the poor people of Pakistan. He was compassionate for others, especially Mortenson when helping him with his project. Ugh...it doesn't say anything about his dress or the way he looks just that he is Pakistani.
Describe Jean Hoerni (in regard to dress, personality, etc.) Once again I don't see how we are supposed to describe dress because it doesn't say anything about the way he dresses in the book :) But as far as his personality goes, he is a very onery and blunt man but obviously has a compassionate side for those less fortunate then himself, because he approached Mortenson about the school, not Mortenson approaching him.
Chapter 6 - Rawalpindi's Rooftops at Dusk
Discuss the art of doing business in Pakistan- Its all about talking the other person down which, if you have the right person helping you, is not too difficult. Also it is all about taking your time and talking with the person you are doing business with and making sure you are getting the best quality for the best deal. Its quite interesting.
Compare and contrast 4 different business activities between Pakistan and the US
Well in America, half the time drinks aren't even allowed in stores. But in Pakistan, it is necessary to have tea while doing business. In America, people just want to get in and out, and not spend a bunch of time shopping. But in Pakistan, it is absolutely necessary to take your time. Also, in America, it is very rare that you can talk someone down on the price of an item that is already marked but in Pakistan, talking down the seller of the product is common and often necessary. And last but certainly not least, in America we don't ever stop work to pray. But in Pakistan, praying is mandatory no matter where you are.
Chapter 5
1.The book is finally picking up and there is some highs and lows that Mortenson has experienced.
Highs: Mortenson sends out six letters hoping that this will attract attention and donations to his cause. He learns how to use a computer from Syed for the first time and ends up sending 580 letters out to people that next weekend. Mortenson starts dating Marina, with the help of Marina asking him out. Children at the Westside Elementary School heard about Mortenson and his cause and send a $623.45 check to help build the school. Tim Brokaw sent Mortenson a $100 check after receiving a letter from Mortenson.
Lows: Before learning how to use a typewriter, Mortenson gets fed up with having to write letter after letter individually. Raising money for the school was more difficult than Mortenson had hoped, with the support from people not there. Soon after Mortenson had applied for sixteen grants, they all ended up being rejected. Mortenson did not have money, so to save he sold practically everything he owned and lived out of his car.
2.Tom Vaughn - co-worker and climbing partner, they talk about their past climbs and what they hope to achieve in the future.
Kishwar Syed – taught Mortenson how to use a computer to help further his advancement in his hopes to build a school, he is also a Pakistani.
Westside Elementary School – sent Mortenson a $623.45 check to help fun his school building project.
Tom Brokaw – was one of the only few who responded to the letter Mortenson sent out with a $100 check, he also attended school with Mortenson.
Jean Hoerni – A very wealthy scientist who provides the foundation money to help build the school.
3.Kishwar Syed is a Pakistani man. He is short and wears a turban like all the rest of him. He is very knowledgeable for living where he lives. He is quiet until he gets to know someone better.
4.Jean Hoerni is a wealthy scientist who is getting much older as each month passes. He is very stubborn and doesn’t like to wait for things to get done. He is very sophisticated in his appearance and dress.
Chapter 6
1.Doing business in the U.S. is just paying the asking price, in Pakistan it is all a game of bartering and eventually ending up with a lower price.
2.In Pakistan you are able to barter down the prices, in the US you are not able to do this
In Pakistan you are able to pretend like you are leaving because you do not like the price, in the US no one cares if you do not like the price, you pay what you see.
In Pakistan you drink tea and relax while you negotiate prices. In the US you do not do that, you just go and buy the things.
In Pakistan you usually go into a back room or something and drink some tea and talk about the prices of the products. In the US you just go to the store grab your item and pay, sometimes not even talking to cashier.
Summarize the highs and lows Mortenson experienced in this chapter through brief examples.
Mortenson gets to go on a date with Maria after long night just talking she finaly asks him out on a date.
Jean Heroni gave him a 12,000 dollar check so he could build a school in Pakistan.
Lows: Had to sell his car and all his climbing gear to raise more money. Had to leave Maria to finish what he started im Pakistan

Chapter 6 - Rawalpindi's Rooftops at Dusk
Discuss the art of doing business in Pakistan They do business kind of like Mexico the all stand out on the street and sell stuff you can haggle with them to get a lower price or act like your leaving and they will lower it more so you buy there products
Compare and contrast 4 different business activities between Pakistan and the US
Pakisan you can haggle the price down. US you cant bargin the price you just buy it.
Pakistan you dont get to see exactly what your buying you just have to buy it and see US you can see all of what your buying
Pakistan you drink tea with negotiating US you dont
Summary: Highs and Lows
Being a twenty five year old that doesn’t know how to use a computer, typewriters seem like the only way to write a letter. However, when the company decided to produce the typewriters they didn’t know that Greg Mortenson would be using them. The entire time he needed to use it he would press two keys together and have to start over again. This happened many times and produced one of the lows in raising money. However his mother became a principal at a school and had Greg over to talk to the children about the happenings in Pakistan, where later they spontaneously had a “Pennies for Pakistan” drive, to help raise money for Greg. This was one high in Greg’s life. However, the hundreds of letters that he had sent only produced, after six months, one check for 100 dollars and a letter of wished luck adding another low in the ongoing up and down struggle for raising money. He later, with the help of Tom Vaughan, reached a man that donated twelve thousand dollars to build the entire school.
Characters so far:
Tom Vaughan: One of the many Doctors at the UCLA hospital is Tom Vaughan. He is an avid climber, which is a main reason that Greg Mortenson like to hang out with him, and is involved with being a doctor and working at the hospital. He helps Greg get a hold of Jean Hoerni through a newsletter that Tom and Jean receive.
Kishwar Syed: A hardworking employee at a local Berkley Computer outlet store is Kishwar Syed. Kishwar find Greg all the resources he needs and the knowledge of using computers, so that Greg can more efficiently write the 580 letters to possible donators for Greg’s school.
Westside Elementary School: This school put together a charity fund called “Pennies for Pakistan”, to help raise money for Greg to aid in his financial efforts to build the school. They come up with this idea after they hear Greg speak in classes about the dismal lifestyle and horrible educational location that the children of Pakistan have to deal with.
Tom Brokaw: Tom Brokaw was the only person who found it in his heart to provide a donation for Greg and his efforts to build the school. Along with the one-hundred dollar donation Tom also sent a letter for best of luck and hopes of success.
Jean Hoerni: A grouchy old timer that has climbed more mountains than many climbers have seen, is called by Greg and is asked if he can donate a substantial amount of money, almost the total amount actually, to help Greg. He is suspicious that Greg with take the money and run off the Mexico and spend it all on fun. He agrees to give the money and provided the means for Greg to keep his promise.
• Describe Kishwar Syed (in regard to dress, personality, etc.)
Kishwar is mild in manner and dress. Casual and laid back, just enjoying the life style that America can grant.
• Describe Jean Hoerni (in regard to dress, personality, etc.)
Jean is an old man that is built in frame and muscle but is suffering due to age. He has graying hair and thick glasses. I imagine him looking like an seventy year old Stan Lee.
Chapter 6 - Rawalpindi's Rooftops at Dusk
Discuss the art of doing business in Pakistan
• Compare and contrast 4 different business activities between Pakistan and the US
In the US, businessmen have a set price that isn’t negotiable, but in Pakistan there are many ways to impress on a salesman that you want a lower price and can do so by walking away or yelling at them in order for them to have a lower price. In Pakistan they show the product instead of hiding the bad items and showing the good ones, as seen in the US. They are fair and tell about each of the products that they are going to sell. Also, as seen in Pakistan, they frequently use tea in their negotiations which is an important part of the culture of Pakistan, where in the US coffee is mostly used. Another difference in Pakistan is the fact that demeaning language is used to help in the bargaining process, which is another interesting part of culture and is accepted widely throughout.
Chapter 5
1. His low was being angry at the type writer, his high was getting his first check.
2. Tom Vaughn - co-worker of Mortenson at the hospital.
Kishwar Syed - Helped Mortenson to use a typewriter and to make a letter.
Westside Elementary School - Raised 62,345 pennies ($623.45)
Tom Brokaw - A childhood friend and celebrity who was the first to send Mortenson $100.
Jean Hoerni - A fellow climber buddy who sent him $12,000.
3. Kishwar Syed - From a different part of Pakistan, Intelligent and a computer/mac user and happy to help Mortenson.
4. Jean Hoerni - Very rich, mean, straightforward old man who does care about the children in Pakistan.
Chapter 6
1. It's basically like a barder market as seen in China and Mexico and other places, mainly where shops are set up outside, you walk up to the stand and argue about a price until you come to a compromise.
2. In the US we pay the price that is asked, in Pakistan its negotiable. In Pakistan prices are cheap, in America there not.
In Pakistan you drink tea while debating the price of a product, in the US you don't.
In the US if you think the price is too high and pretend to walk out just to possibly lower the price the cashier will just think your being rude or stupid, while in Pakistan thats quite common, as well in China, its wheeling and dealing.
This chapter is shows mortensen’s highs and lows while he was promoting funding for a school in Pakistan.
Mortenson is depresed because nobady wright back and he wants to help the children. But then he gets a phone call from Jean Hoerni and he is the one that helps him out by giving him the money.
Tom Brokaw - The only celebrity who responded to Mortenson's letter by donating $100. Tom attended the same school as Mortenson and had the same football coach.
